Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) Preparation
Your exam will be scheduled through Dr. Shockey's office.
Arrival time: Come to the GI Laboratory 60 minutes before the test time.
Location of the exam: West Entrance Mercy Memorial Hospital
(Next to the heliport across the street from the mall)
Diet: The evening before, do not eat after 9 pm and do not drink after 12 midnight.
Medications: Hold all medications at midnight till after the procedure.
Stop Coumadin (Warfarin), Plavix (Clopidogrel), Asprin or any other blood
thinners 4 days before the exam. If unable to stop these, your primary care
doctor will need to make special preparations.
Stop Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), Naprosyn (Aleve), Mobic (Meloxicam),
Celebrex or other arthritis medication (NSAID's) 3 days before the procedure.
Bring a list of your medications along with you to the GI lab.
Lab tests: If you are taking Coumadin a Protime INR test will need to be done 1-2
days before the procedure. If you are a female 55 yrs. of age or younger, a
pregnancy test is required unless you have had a tubal ligation or hysterectomy.
Transportation: You must have a driver present to take you home before we can
start the procedure.
Recovery: The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. The
recovery period is about 30 minutes. After discharge plan to eat a small, light
meal. Further instructions will be given at the GI lab.
